Fossil has been crafting timepieces for over 30 years. However, the firm has not got quite the same experience when it comes to the smart variety. It launched its first wearable in 2015 and has made one or two each ever since.

The Fossil Spor Gen 5 was announced last year appearing almost identical in appearance to its slightly younger versions, the Explorist. However, this time it is based on the latest Qualcomm Wear 3100 processor, which is a much more efficient chip and should, in theory, result in extended battery life.

Android users who want a smartwatch have to choose between several mediocre options. Fossil Sport Gen 5 smartwatches don’t really change that equation, but they do make at least one of those options a little better.

Fossil Sport Gen 5 looks like a typical Wear OS smartwatch, which means that it has around OLED screen with a fairly large bezel. Although it comes in a small variety of styles, all of them have 44mm cases with three chunky buttons sticking out of the right-hand side of the watch.

The design of Fossil Sport Gen 5

Although it is cheaper than most smartwatches, the design is exceptional. The first thing to notice on Fossil Sport Gen 5 is that, unfortunately, it does feel a little cheap and of course is not something that you want. This isn’t helped by its lightweight which, on the other hand, does make it very comfortable to wear, a bonus for those people looking for something light, slick, and unobtrusive.

All in all, the Fossil Sport Gen 5 is well designed and flaunts a nice, minimalistic aesthetic, which we think is important or smartwatches considering how much information is usually displayed on the screen.

The Case

The Fossil Sport Gen 5 comes in 2 sizes 41mm and a marginally bigger 43mm, each of which is made to suit different wrist sizes.

The Performance on Fossil Sport Gen 5

Powered by the fresh Qualcomm Wear 3100 chip, the Fossil Sport Gen 5 should be one of the most powerful smartwatches on the market. This is because it is said to be a much more efficient chip, offering any smartwatches that feature it a better level of performance while using less power, something should result in extended battery life. But the thing is, it doesn’t.

The Strap

The watch uses 22mm straps that are fairly simple to change out and should give you a wide variety of replacement options.

The Battery life

As mentioned earlier, the battery life has not improved here. It is usually a big problem for Wear OS watches, but the Fossil Sport Gen 5 manages to help users squeeze out more power with some helpful battery-saving modes.

Overall review

The small tweaks to the Wear OS user experience, paired with improved specs, markedly better performance and enhanced power management collectively render the Fossil Sport Gen 5 an excellent all-rounder. This is a smartwatch that is suited for anyone who likes every information on their wrist.
